Positioning for engineers: why your best feature is not your message.

Technical founders lead with specs. The market buys outcomes. Here is a practical method for translating engineering depth into a position buyers actually remember.
Why the best feature is not the message
When you know your product deeply, every feature feels essential. But a buyer three vendors into a comparison does not remember your spec sheet. They remember the company that made the decision feel easy. Positioning is the work of being that company.
From feature to outcome
- Start with the buyer’s problem, in their words, not your architecture.
- Name the outcome your best customers actually got, ideally with a number.
- Make the feature the reason to believe, not the headline.
Test it on a stranger
If someone outside your industry cannot repeat your position back after one read, it is not a position yet. It is a description. Sharpen until it is repeatable, because the market only remembers what it can repeat.
